Thriller Trailer Analysis - James Presland

The Dark Knight Rises trailer analysis.
General information
The Dark Knight Rises is a 2012 British-American superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan Nolan, and the story with David S. Goyer. Featuring the DC Comics character Batman, the film is the final installment in Nolan's Batman film trilogy, and the sequel to Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008).

1. The establishing shot is of a young boy singing the United states of America national anthem. Apart from the young boys voice there is only the sound of the crowd mumbling. This creates an unsettled atmosphere. The silence from the first shot also adds to the mysterious and disconcerted atmosphere.

2. The film then shows a silver cloche in the middle of an empty table. Then an overlay audio of Alfred talking to Bruce Wayne in a very sorrow and trembling voice. The boys voice then begins again however this time there is a deep bass under layer which amplifies the mysterious feel to the trailer and also makes the boys voice seem distorted and evil.

3. The use of several large audio stops makes the audience feel as though they can not predict what happens next. The visual of police officers dropping to the floor in fear after a tremor from a large explosion introduces the idea that fear controls the authority and that the establishment does not have control anymore.

4. The next important scene is one filmed in the same football stadium which the boy from before was singing in. This scene features the american football game being played, however, during the game the field begins to explode. This use of Computer Generated Imagery is very interesting and intriguing. The camera is moving with the football players in this scene, this gives the illusion that the audience is in the action e.g. as a referee or another player. The silence featured in this scene adds to the ominous and threatening atmosphere.

Overall, i think the Dark Knight Rises conforms to traditional thriller conventions as there are many props which portray threatening and dangerous feelings. The audio also creates an ominous and frightening mood which aids the atmosphere created by the variety of camera shots and angles which disorientates the audience.
